Words that don't embarrass
the product.

I write the copy, strategy and story work for brands who'd rather sound like a human than a focus group.

Fourteen clients last year; three over £100k in fees; zero complaints about tone. Based in Manchester, working across the UK, EU and (one regular) Tokyo. Taking new projects from mid-June.

A handful of pieces.

Because a portfolio of only finished products is misleading — here are four small samples, each about a paragraph long, with the brief they came out of.

Website · hero
Lantern Health
2025 · fintech-for-health-systems
We built Lantern for the part of health finance no-one wanted to own — the bit where the invoice meets the insurance claim, and both sides are pretty sure the other's wrong. We're quiet about the middle.

The brief called for a hero that acknowledged the unglamorous middle of their product without flinching. Paired with the founder's own research data below.

Brief Hero + sub-hero, 80-120 wordsRounds 2Outcome Used unchanged on .com
Annual report · foreword
Port Arts Trust
2024 · arts charity · £4.6m turnover
This year the Trust ran twenty-one projects, funded eighty-four artists and, somewhere between the bookkeeping and the weather, put on a show every eleven days of the calendar. None of that happens without a thousand other decisions we didn't get paid for. This report is for the people who made them.

A 400-word foreword for the annual report. Delivered after a 90-minute interview with the outgoing chair. Used in print and online.

Brief Chair's forewordRounds 1Outcome Quoted in The Guardian
Naming + launch line
Butter Bread Bakery
2024 · new London bakery
Two ingredients, every morning at six, Butter Bread. Sometimes there's a queue, usually there isn't, never a loyalty app. Have a look in on the way to the tube; take one home if the day demands it.

Name, tagline and a short "about" paragraph for a new East London bakery. No rebrand — they asked for a name that suggested a family shop that had always been there. Still on the door, eighteen months later.

Brief Name + 60-word aboutRounds 3Outcome On signage & bread-bags
Strategy document · voice
Stoke Collective
2024 · music-industry co-op
We'd rather be underestimated than over-promising. We don't do keynotes, manifestos, or mission statements. We run a room. We're in the business of making sure the right people find each other in it, and the rest is worked out in conversation.

Short voice-and-tone document for a music-industry collective. One paragraph defining position; a page of do/don't phrases; the internal version is four pages longer and more useful to the team.

Brief Voice document, 2pp + 4ppRounds 2Outcome Adopted across comms
— 02 · Process

How it goes, in four steps.

I work in clear, billable stages. You can end any one of them and pay only for that stage.

01

Brief & interviews

An hour with you, 30 minutes each with two to three people you work with. I read what you have; note what you don't.

Week 1
02

Positioning & voice

A short document — three to six pages — that fixes the position and the voice. We meet to agree this before any copy.

Week 2
03

Copy draft

First full draft of everything in scope. Two rounds of revision; each round has named leads on your side to reduce edit-by-committee.

Weeks 3-4
04

Hand-off & a check-in

Final copy delivered as a plain-text doc, Google Doc, or direct to your CMS/dev team. Optional 30-minute check-in four weeks later.

Week 5 + 30d
— 03 · Packages

Fixed price, because that's simpler.

Three typical engagements. For work that doesn't fit, I quote a fixed price after a first conversation — never a day rate.

Two working days, one reply.

Every enquiry gets a personal reply within two working days. Either a proposal or a recommendation of someone better for the job — no automated follow-ups, no funnel.

What to include

The more detail you can give me up front, the more useful my reply. At minimum:

  • Organisation & sector
  • What's changing & why
  • Rough timeline & drop-dead date
  • Budget frame · to help scope properly
  • Existing work · current site, brand guide, the one thing you're most proud of

Representation & agents: I work directly with clients, no intermediaries.
